Summary of the Undertaking given by Dr. Riam Shammaa to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, effective December 17, 2024:
The College has received information regarding Dr. Shammaa’s standard of practice and is conducting an investigation into the information. During the investigation and in the event of a referral to the Discipline Tribunal, Dr. Shammaa has restricted his practice as follows:
Dr. Shammaa will comply with the Food and Drugs Act, R.S.C., 1985, c. F-27, and the Food and Drug Regulations, C.R.C., c. 870, including by adhering to Health Canada’s Policy Position Paper, Autologous Cell Therapy Products;
Dr. Shammaa will not not provide or offer to provide cell therapy products, including but not limited to bone marrow aspirate transplants or stem cells, except as explicitly authorized by Health Canada in the context of a Clinical Trial Application or a New Drug Submission; and
Dr. Shammaa will not advertise the provision of any cell therapy products, including but not limited to bone marrow aspirate transplants or stem cells, on any print media, electronic media, social media, or the internet, except as explicitly authorized by Health Canada in the context of a Clinical Trial Application or a New Drug Submission.
Dr. Shammaa shall post a clearly visible sign in the waiting rooms, examination rooms and consulting rooms of all Practice Locations, which states as follows: “Dr. Shammaa must comply with the Food and Drugs Act, R.S.C., 1985, c. F-27, and the Food and Drug Regulations, C.R.C., c. 870. Dr. Shammaa must not provide or offer to provide cell therapy products, including but not limited to bone marrow aspirate transplants or stem cells, except as explicitly authorized by Health Canada in the context of a Clinical Trial Application or New Drug Submission.
